The Land Rover Defender Dakar D7X-R has finally been unveiled, and it is ready to make its competitive debut at the 48th edition of the Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia on 3rd January 2026. This special rally-spec model is based on the Defender Octa variant, but it has been completely tuned and upgraded for extreme rally-raid conditions. With a stronger engine, advanced cooling technology, bigger tyres, and a massive 550-litre fuel tank, the Defender Dakar D7X-R is built to survive one of the toughest racing events in the world.

The Land Rover Defender Dakar D7X-R powered by a BMW-sourced 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine that delivers amazing performance. It produces 626 bhp and 750 Nm torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic gearbox. This powerful setup ensures fast acceleration, strong low-end pull, and reliable performance throughout long Dakar rally stages. The engine has been tuned especially for rally racing where the SUV needs to handle sand, rocks, high-speed dunes, and unpredictable desert terrain.
To handle the extreme heat in the desert, the Defender Dakar D7X-R comes with a three-radiator cooling layout. It includes one large main radiator supported by extra 12-volt fans for better airflow. This setup helps keep the engine cool even under constant high performance. The SUV also features a particle filter and an intake restrictor, which provide sand protection and help the vehicle comply with FIA rally regulations. These upgrades are essential for durability during long rally-raid stages.

For better stability and control on rough surfaces, Land Rover has equipped the Defender Dakar D7X-R with a massive tyre setup. The tyre width has been increased by 60 mm compared to the standard Defender, and the Dakar D7X-R now rides on 35-inch off-road tyres specially designed for rally racing. The braking system has also been upgraded to handle the high-speed demands of rally stages, offering more stopping power and improved safety during intense racing moments.
One of the biggest things of the Defender Dakar D7X-R has 550-litre of fuel tank. Dakar rally routes are extremely long, and refueling points are limited. This large fuel capacity allows the SUV to cover long distances without stopping, giving it a strong advantage during long rally sections. It ensures consistent performance and fewer interruptions during the event.

Inside, the Defender Dakar D7X-R keeps the familiar Defender interior layout but adds several rally-specific upgrades. It comes equipped with a full roll cage, FIA-approved racing seats, multipoint harnesses, and an FIA regulated navigation system.
The switchgear and control panels have also been redesigned to make it easier for the co-driver to operate and manage navigation and communication during rally-raid stages. These additions improve safety and make the SUV fully compliant with international rally standards.
